Making tea, thermogram

Making a cup of tea. Image 2 of 4. Thermogram of a hand pouring boiling water from a kettle into a pot to make tea. The colours show variations in temperature. The scale runs from white (warmest), through yellow, orange, red and purple to blue (coldest). Thermography records the temperature of surfaces by detecting long-wavelength infrared radiation. The heat of the boiling water is seen as it fills the teapot, but less heat is lost than is seen escaping from the open lid of the kettle. The handles remain cool due to the little contact they have with the hot surfaces. For a sequence of thermograms showing a cup of tea being made, see images H584/103-106

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the process of making tea through a thermogram. In this particular image, we witness a hand pouring boiling water from a kettle into a pot to prepare the perfect cup of tea. The vibrant colors displayed in the thermogram represent variations in temperature, with white indicating the warmest areas and blue representing the coldest. Thermography, a scientific technique that detects long-wavelength infrared radiation, records surface temperatures. As we observe this image closely, we can see how heat is visually depicted as it fills the teapot while less heat escapes from the open lid of the kettle. This demonstrates how efficient thermal insulation plays an essential role in preserving heat during tea preparation. Interestingly, despite being exposed to hot surfaces, the handles remain cool due to their minimal contact with them. This highlights both practical design and functionality in ensuring safety during use. The combination of science and photography beautifully showcases not only our fascination with technology but also our appreciation for everyday rituals like making tea. Through this stunning visual representation captured by Science Photo Library's skilled photographers, we gain insight into how thermal sensing techniques can be utilized to enhance our understanding of temperature dynamics in various objects and settings - even something as simple yet comforting as enjoying a cup of warm tea on any given day.
