EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Palaeolithic period, between 45, 000 and 10, 000 years ago. Inside a reconstructed mammoth bone hut in Mezhirich, Ukraine, archaeologists immerse themselves in the ancient world. The walls of this remarkable dwelling are constructed entirely from mammoth bones and tusks, supported by wooden branches and struts. Intriguingly, these scientists have taken on the role of musicians as they experiment with using mammoth bones as percussion instruments. They believe that the original inhabitants of this very hut would have done the same all those millennia ago. This unique insight into their daily lives adds an extra layer of fascination to this archaeological discovery. The photograph was captured in 1976 by Science Photo Library during a moment when history came alive through music. It showcases not only the dedication and expertise of these researchers but also their ability to transport us back to a time long gone. As we observe this scene frozen in time, we are reminded of our connection to our ancestors who once roamed these lands alongside magnificent creatures like woolly mammoths. This image serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity throughout history – forever seeking answers about our past while appreciating its beauty.
