Mangrove roots

Mangrove roots. Aerial roots of a red mangrove tree (Rhizophora mangle) in a swamp. The mangrove inhabits brackish water in tropical and sub- tropical areas. The aerial roots allow the tree to obtain carbon dioxide from the air and help to stabilise it in the soft mud. They trap soil and silt, aiding the formation of new land in coastal areas. The roots also provide support for seedlings, which are unique in that they germinate while still attached to the parent plant. Only after weeks of growth do the seedlings drop off (one seen at lower centre). Photographed at Puna, Hawaii, USA

Aerial Hawaii Root Roots Swamp Us A Puna Rhizophora Mangle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of mangrove roots in all their glory. The image captures a mesmerizing aerial view of the red mangrove tree's roots, gracefully extending from its trunk into the surrounding swampy environment. Found in tropical and sub-tropical areas, these remarkable trees thrive in brackish water. The aerial roots serve multiple purposes for the mangrove tree. Firstly, they enable it to absorb carbon dioxide directly from the air, aiding its respiration process. Additionally, these roots play a crucial role in stabilizing the tree within the soft mud by providing extra support and anchorage. But that's not all! Mangrove roots also act as nature's land builders. As they trap soil and silt carried by tides and currents, they contribute to the formation of new land along coastal areas. This unique characteristic makes them vital players in maintaining coastal ecosystems. Moreover, these resilient roots offer a nurturing environment for seedlings to grow. In an extraordinary feat of nature, seedlings germinate while still attached to their parent plant's root system. Only after weeks of growth do they eventually detach themselves and embark on their independent journey towards maturity. This stunning photograph was taken at Puna, Hawaii in the United States by Science Photo Library—a testament to both Mother Nature's artistry and scientific curiosity about our natural world.
