Marcello Malpighi, Italian biologist

Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694), Italian biologist. Malpighi was a physician by training, graduating at Bologna in 1653. Malpighis observations through his microscope were to revolutionise anatomy. He showed a mechanism for the transfer of air into the blood in the lungs, and observed capillary blood vessels for the first time. Numerous anatomical structures are named after him including Malpighian corpuscles in the spleen and the kidney, the Malpighian layer of the skin, and Malpighian tubules, the excretory organs of insects. After a lifetime of research and lecturing, he spent his last three years as private physician to Pope Innocent XII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Marcello Malpighi, an Italian biologist whose groundbreaking discoveries forever transformed the field of anatomy. Born in 1628 and passing away in 1694, Malpighi was a physician by profession and graduated from Bologna in 1653. However, it was his observations through a microscope that truly revolutionized our understanding of the human body. Malpighi's pioneering work included unveiling the mechanism for air transfer into the blood within lungs and being the first to observe capillary blood vessels. His remarkable contributions were honored with various anatomical structures named after him, such as Malpighian corpuscles found in both spleen and kidney, as well as the Malpighian layer of skin. Additionally, he discovered the excretory organs of insects known as Malpighian tubules. Throughout his illustrious career filled with research and lecturing, Marcello Malpighi spent his final three years serving as Pope Innocent XII's private physician. This engraving from the 17th century captures not only his historical significance but also highlights his role as an inventor and pioneer in biology and medicine. As we reflect on this monochrome image depicting a Caucasian man who made significant contributions to science during his time, we are reminded of how one individual's dedication can shape our understanding of life itself. The legacy left behind by Marcello Malpighi continues to inspire generations of scientists today.
