Martian pebbles, Curiosity rover image C014 / 4939
Martian pebbles, as imaged by NASAs Curiosity rover. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed in the Gale Crater, Mars, on 6 August 2012. This image is part of testing of the rovers Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) instrument. The dust cover on MAHLI was opened for the first time during the 33rd Martian day (sol) of the mission (8 September 2012). This patch of ground is about 86 centimetres across, with the large pebble (lower right) around 8 centimetres across. Shadows cast are visible, as well as the varying thickness of dust on the surrounding ground, possibly influenced by the larger pebbles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Martian pebbles as imaged by NASA's Curiosity rover during its mission on Mars. The image was captured by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) instrument, which had its dust cover opened for the first time on September 8,2012, marking a significant milestone in the exploration of the Red Planet. The patch of ground depicted in this image spans approximately 86 centimeters and features a large pebble measuring around 8 centimeters across. Shadows cast by these intriguing formations are visible, along with varying thicknesses of dust on the surrounding terrain, potentially influenced by the presence of larger pebbles. As part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, Curiosity landed in Gale Crater on August 6,2012. This photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and our insatiable curiosity about worlds beyond our own. With each detail meticulously recorded and analyzed by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), this image contributes to our understanding of planetary science and paves the way for future explorations. It symbolizes our ongoing quest to unravel mysteries within our solar system while showcasing both the beauty and scientific significance found amidst Martian landscapes. Through images like these, we gain invaluable insights into an alien world that continues to captivate us from millions of miles away.
