EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Merapi volcano in Indonesia as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). Standing tall at 2911 meters, this active volcano is known for its powerful eruptions and here we witness its steam plume being blown towards the lower left. The stratus clouds enveloping its lower slopes create a mesmerizing contrast against the white peak of Gunung Merbabu, located around 11 kilometers north of Gunung Merapi. Taken on August 24,2003, by Science Photo Library during Expedition Seven, this image offers a unique perspective on Earth's geological wonders. From an altitude of approximately 380 kilometers above our planet's surface, the ISS provides an unparalleled vantage point for capturing such breathtaking natural phenomena. The photograph not only highlights the beauty and power of nature but also serves as a reminder of Indonesia's rich volcanic landscape. With its steaming crater and billowing smoke visible even from space, Merapi stands as a testament to both the awe-inspiring forces shaping our planet and their potential impact on human settlements nearby. Science Photo Library continues to bring us remarkable images like this one that bridge science and artistry. Through their lens, we gain insight into Earth observation and volcanology while appreciating the sheer magnificence of our world from above.
