Mercury hemispheres, MESSENGER images C016 / 9723
Mercury hemispheres, MESSENGER images. Monochrome (left) and colour-filtered (right) images of a hemisphere of Mercury. North is at top and the hemispheres are centred at longitude 285 degrees West. The dark crater at upper left is the Rachmaninoff crater. These paired orthographic projections, each consisting of thousands of images, were published in 2013, updating earlier work from 2011. They form part of NASAs Planetary Data System. Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is 4880 kilometres across. The MESSENGER spacecraft entered orbit around Mercury in March 2011. Image data from the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Mercury, our closest neighbor to the Sun. The image consists of two hemispheres of the planet, captured by NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft and published in 2013 as part of their Planetary Data System. On the left side, we see a monochrome representation, while on the right side, a color-filtered version reveals vibrant details. The dark crater at the upper left corner is none other than Rachmaninoff crater, adding an intriguing element to this celestial portrait. With its north positioned at the top and centered at longitude 285 degrees West, this image provides us with a unique perspective of Mercury's surface features. Measuring approximately 4880 kilometers across, Mercury appears both majestic and enigmatic in this duo presentation. Thousands of images were meticulously pieced together to create these paired orthographic projections that allow us to delve into planetary science and explore its mysteries. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph against a black background, it serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit for knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries. Letting our imaginations soar alongside satellites like MESSENGER enables us to appreciate not only the wonders within our own solar system but also sparks curiosity about what lies beyond.
