Micrometer screw gauge

Micrometer screw gauge. This is an instrument used to accurately measure small distances. Here it is being used to measure the thickness of a piece of wire (upper left). The wire is seen end on, and is held by the adjustable measuring clamp, which has been tightened (screw handle at right) until the wire is loosely clamped. The measured value is obtained using two gauges. The first (not clearly seen) measures to an accuracy of 0.5 millimetres. The circular gauge (seen here) provides further accuracy to 0.01 millimetres. The wire is shown to be 0.47 millimetres thick. This micrometer has a maximum measuring capacity of 25 millimetres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a micrometer screw gauge, an indispensable instrument used for precise measurements of small distances. In this particular image, the micrometer is being employed to measure the thickness of a wire. The wire, positioned end on and securely held by an adjustable measuring clamp tightened with a screw handle, is loosely clamped to ensure accurate results. The measurement process involves two gauges: the first gauge measures with an accuracy of 0.5 millimeters (not clearly visible in the photo), while the circular gauge seen here provides further precision down to 0.01 millimeters. Astonishingly, it reveals that the wire has a thickness of precisely 0.47 millimeters. Designed for engineering applications and widely utilized in laboratories and classrooms alike, this micrometer boasts a maximum measuring capacity of 25 millimeters – making it suitable for various tasks requiring meticulous measurements. This photograph not only highlights the technological advancements in measurement devices but also emphasizes their significance within scientific fields such as physics and mechanics. It serves as a visual reminder of how mechanical instruments like micrometers play an integral role in obtaining accurate physical results through precise measurements – ultimately contributing to advancements in technology and engineering practices across industries worldwide.
