Miners in a timbered tunnel

Miners in a timbered tunnel. Historical artwork of workers in a 19th century mine, loading debris and rocks onto a wagon. Timber was used in mines to support the roof. The construction consisted of two upright beams joined by another across the ceiling. These were spaced out and joined by lateral beams. Often the wood would break, necessitating rapid fixing to avoid the danger of a cave-in. In the UK the wood of choice was Larch and Oak. Taken from Mines and Miners, L. Simonin, 1868

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the arduous life of miners in a timbered tunnel during the 19th century. The historical artwork depicts a group of determined workers loading debris and rocks onto a sturdy wagon, utilizing timber supports to secure the roof above them. The construction of these supports involved two upright beams joined by another across the ceiling, with lateral beams connecting them at intervals. However, due to the immense pressure and strain on the wood, breakages were common, posing imminent danger for cave-ins. In this particular scene captured from "Mines and Miners" by L. Simonin in 1868, we witness these brave men swiftly fixing broken timbers to ensure their safety underground. The use of Larch and Oak as preferred woods for support is highlighted here, showcasing their strength and resilience in an industrial setting. The illustration not only provides insight into mining technology during that era but also sheds light on the physical labor endured by these courageous individuals. With shovels in hand and determination etched on their faces, these Caucasian miners exemplify unwavering dedication towards extracting valuable resources from deep within the Earth. As we delve into this snapshot from history's annals through Science Photo Library's lens, it serves as a reminder of how far our industry has progressed while honoring those who paved our path forward amidst challenging circumstances.
