Mirrors of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, JCMT

James Clerk Maxwell telescope. View of the primary and secondary mirrors of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). JCMT is a 15 metre telescope designed for observations at millimetre and sub- millimetre wavelengths (between radio & infrared). The primary or main mirror, paraboloid in shape, is composed of 276 adjustable panels. Radiation is focused from this mirror onto a small secondary hyperboloid mirror held above the main mirror by a metal frame. Infrared detectors then receive the signal from a cabin located below the main mirror. The telescope is seen housed in its observatory. JCMT is located at 4200 metres altitude on the summit of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii

Astrophysics Mauna Kea Telescope James Clerk Maxwell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate design of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), a remarkable 15-meter telescope situated atop the majestic Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii. The image provides a mesmerizing view of both the primary and secondary mirrors, which play a crucial role in capturing millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelength observations. The primary mirror, with its paraboloid shape, is composed of an astonishing 276 adjustable panels that work harmoniously to focus radiation onto a smaller secondary hyperboloid mirror. Suspended above the main mirror by a sturdy metal frame, this secondary mirror directs the concentrated signal towards infrared detectors located within a cabin beneath. Immersed within its observatory, this cutting-edge telescope stands tall at an altitude of 4200 meters on Mauna Kea's dormant summit. Its strategic location allows for optimal astronomical observations while being shielded from atmospheric disturbances. As we delve into astrophysics and explore our vast universe, instruments like JCMT serve as invaluable tools for unraveling cosmic mysteries. This awe-inspiring photograph not only captures the technical brilliance behind this scientific marvel but also highlights humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our earthly boundaries.
