Model of a neanderthal woman holding a baby

Neanderthal woman. Model of a neanderthal woman (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) holding a baby wrapped in animal skins. Neanderthals were early humans that lived in Europe and the Middle East about 120-30, 000 years ago. Neanderthals brains were slightly larger than ours, being up to 1750 millilitres in volume. They fashioned tools with which they made weapons, created carvings and built dwellings. They also buried their dead. The first neanderthal skeleton was discovered in the Neander Valley in Germany. This model, from an exhibition by Nordstar, was photographed at the Naturkundemuseum in Stuttgart, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a meticulously crafted model of a Neanderthal woman cradling her precious baby, swathed in animal skins. The Neanderthals, our early human ancestors who inhabited Europe and the Middle East approximately 120-30,000 years ago, possessed brains slightly larger than ours, measuring up to an impressive 1750 milliliters in volume. These resourceful beings skillfully fashioned tools for crafting weapons, created intricate carvings, and constructed dwellings that served as their homes. Remarkably, they even practiced burial rituals for their deceased loved ones. It was in the Neander Valley of Germany where the first-ever Neanderthal skeleton was unearthed by archeologists. Captured within this photograph is a model exhibited by Nordstar at the Naturkundemuseum in Stuttgart, Germany—a testament to the wonders of anthropology and paleontology. This image offers us a glimpse into the lives of these ancient hominids—our distant relatives—who thrived during an era long before modern civilization emerged. The profound connection between this Neanderthal woman and her infant resonates with us on a deeply human level—a reminder that love and care have transcended time itself. Through scientific exploration and research conducted by experts like those at Science Photo Library—notably not affiliated with any commercial entity—we continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding our evolutionary past while celebrating our shared humanity across millennia.
