Five monaural stethoscopes dating from between 1860 and 1890. These are made from ebony and fruitwood. French physician, Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec invented the monaural stethoscope in 1816. This design, which is essentially a wooden cylinder with a hole bored out down the centre, was the earliest form of a diagnostic device for listening to internal sounds of the body (auscultation). The far right stethoscope is designed by Billings (also known as Billings type)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases five monaural stethoscopes dating back to the 19th century. Crafted from exquisite ebony and fruitwood, these wooden cylinders with a hole bored down the center represent the earliest form of diagnostic devices for auscultation, or listening to internal sounds of the body. Renowned French physician Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec is credited with inventing this groundbreaking design in 1816. The far right stethoscope in this collection is a special creation by Archibald Billing, also known as Billings type. These devices played an integral role in cardiovascular healthcare during that era. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of how far medical technology has come since those early days. Yet, we can't help but appreciate the simplicity and elegance of these wooden wonders that paved the way for modern diagnostic equipment. Science Photo Library presents us with yet another glimpse into our rich medical past through their remarkable collection. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation while honoring those who have contributed to advancing healthcare throughout history.
