Morning glory flower pollination, SEM

Morning glory flower pollination. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains (orange) on the stigma of a morning glory flower (Ipomoea learii). The pollen grains, which contain male genetic material, have become trapped by the stigmas papillae (tiny projections, yellow). The stigma is part of the female reproductive structure (pistil), which is formed from one or more carpels. Each carpel consists of a stigma, a style and an ovary (not seen). If the female sex cells (ovules) in the ovary become fertilised by the pollen grains male sex cells, the carpel may ripen to produce a fruit containing seeds. Magnification: x150 at 6x7cm size

Carpel Grains Morning Glory Papilla Papillae Pistil Pollen Grain Pollination Re Production Reproductive Stigma

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of morning glory flower pollination. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we can observe the delicate orange pollen grains adorning the stigma of a morning glory flower, known scientifically as Ipomoea learii. The pollen grains, carrying male genetic material, have become ensnared by the tiny yellow papillae protruding from the stigma. The stigma itself is an essential component of the female reproductive structure called a pistil, which is formed by one or more carpels. Each carpel consists of a stigma, style, and ovary (not visible in this image). If fertilization occurs between the female sex cells (ovules) within the ovary and the male sex cells contained in these pollen grains, then that particular carpel may mature into a fruit containing seeds. With a magnification level of x150 at 6x7cm size, this SEM offers us an up-close look at nature's remarkable mechanisms for reproduction. It provides valuable insights into botany and plant biology while highlighting both beauty and complexity simultaneously. This stunning visual representation reminds us of how interconnected various elements are within our natural world – from microscopic structures to grand ecosystems – all working harmoniously to perpetuate life on Earth.
