Mountain gorilla family group

Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) family group, with an infant at lower left. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The high elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of vegetation daily (roots, leaves and stems) and can reach over 2 metres in height. Infants stay with their mothers for 3 to 4 years. This slow reproductive rate has left mountain gorillas vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Photographed in Virunga National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment of a Mountain gorilla family group in their natural habitat. The image showcases the incredible bond between these majestic creatures, with an adorable infant nestled at the lower left corner. These endangered mountain gorillas reside high up on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, amidst cloud forests that are characterized by cold temperatures and abundant rainfall. The adults, towering over two meters in height, sustain themselves by consuming several kilograms of vegetation daily, including roots, leaves, and stems. Meanwhile, their infants remain under their mother's care for three to four years before gaining independence. Unfortunately, due to their slow reproductive rate and various threats such as habitat destruction, poaching, and war; these gentle giants face great vulnerability. Photographed within Rwanda's Virunga National Park – a sanctuary for these remarkable animals – this image serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of conservation efforts. It portrays not only the beauty but also highlights the urgent need to protect these magnificent creatures from extinction. With its lush foliage glistening under raindrops falling from above, this photograph encapsulates both the delicate balance of nature and maternal care exhibited by female mountain gorillas. It offers viewers an intimate glimpse into African wildlife while emphasizing our responsibility to safeguard endangered species like these great apes who call Central Africa home.
