Muscular artery

Muscular artery. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a muscular artery. This blood vessel has a thick, muscular wall that enables it to carry blood under pressure. This wall is composed of three layers. The innermost tunica intima surrounds the lumen (tube, white). It possesses a fine elastic sheet (dark purple, convoluted) known as the internal elastic lamina. The middle layer, the thick tunica media, is mainly composed of smooth muscle fibres (purple), interspersed with a few connective collagen fibres (blue). The external tunica adventitia (blue) is composed mainly of connective tissue. Trichrome blue stain. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a transverse section of a muscular artery, providing us with a glimpse into the intricate world of our circulatory system. The artery's robust structure is evident in its thick, muscular wall, which enables it to efficiently transport blood under pressure. Comprising three distinct layers, this remarkable vessel demonstrates the complexity and resilience of our arterial network. The innermost layer, known as the tunica intima, envelops the lumen with its delicate yet resilient composition. Within this layer lies an elastic sheet called the internal elastic lamina that aids in maintaining structural integrity. Moving outward, we encounter the tunica media - a substantial layer dominated by smooth muscle fibers responsible for regulating blood flow and vessel diameter. Interspersed within these fibers are connective collagen fibers that provide additional support. Finally, we reach the external tunica adventitia composed primarily of connective tissue. This outermost layer acts as a protective shield for the artery while also facilitating interaction with surrounding tissues. Highlighted through trichrome blue stain technique, this micrograph offers valuable insights into histological features crucial for understanding vascular health and anatomy. It serves as a reminder of how essential these intricate networks are to our overall well-being and underscores their role in maintaining normal circulation throughout our incredible human bodies.
