Neanderthals hunting Irish elk, artwork

Neanderthals hunting Irish elk, artwork. Group of Neanderthal hunters attacking a male Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus). The Irish elk was one of the largest deer that ever lived. It ranged across Eurasia from around 400, 000 to 8000 years ago. It was over 2 metres high at the shoulder, with the male having large antlers. Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), now extinct, inhabited Europe and western Asia between 230, 000 and 29, 000 years ago. It is thought that they had language, lived in small family groups and hunted for food. One theory is that they were outcompeted by modern humans (Homo sapiens)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures a pivotal moment in prehistoric history - a group of Neanderthal hunters engaging in a fierce battle with a magnificent male Irish elk. The Irish elk, known scientifically as Megaloceros giganteus, was an awe-inspiring creature that roamed across Eurasia thousands of years ago. Standing over 2 meters tall at the shoulder and adorned with majestic antlers, it was truly one of the largest deer to have ever existed. The Neanderthals, now extinct but once inhabitants of Europe and western Asia, were skilled hunters who relied on their intelligence and teamwork to secure food for their small family groups. This illustration offers us a glimpse into their way of life during the Pleistocene era. Armed with stone-tipped spears, these resourceful individuals bravely confront their formidable prey amidst a grassy landscape. The intensity is palpable as they strategize to overpower this herbivorous giant. It is believed that language played an essential role in their hunting techniques. Sadly, the Neanderthals eventually succumbed to competition from modern humans (Homo sapiens). However, through paleontology and anthropology studies, we continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding our ancient ancestors' existence. This mesmerizing artwork serves as both an educational tool and a testament to our shared evolutionary journey. It reminds us of the rich biological diversity that once thrived on Earth's landscapes while highlighting humanity's remarkable ability to adapt and survive throughout time.
