Nerja Cave, Andalucia, Spain

Interior of the so called Cataclysm Chamber in the Nerja caves complex. Discovered by accident in 1959 by local children, the cave complex extends over 7 km into the Karstified limestone landscape of Southern Spain. In the centre of the image is a 30meter high calcium-carbonate column, thought to be the largest known in any cave system. Archaeological work in the cave shows that it was inhabited by numerous groups from the Upper Paleolithic onwards, 27, 000 years ago. As well as human remains the caves contained many impliments and decorative fragments. Many paintings (pictographs) have also been found and intensive archaeological work is currently underway to date them precisely

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing interior of the Cataclysm Chamber in Nerja Cave, located in Andalucia, Spain. The discovery of this remarkable cave complex was purely accidental, made by local children back in 1959. Stretching over an impressive 7 kilometers into the Karstified limestone landscape of Southern Spain, it is a true wonder to behold. At the heart of this image stands a towering calcium-carbonate column that reaches an astounding height of 30 meters. Believed to be the largest known column within any cave system worldwide, its sheer size and grandeur leave visitors awestruck. Archaeological investigations conducted within these caves have revealed evidence of human habitation dating back an astonishing 27,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic period. Alongside ancient human remains, numerous tools and decorative fragments have been unearthed from their resting places deep within these underground chambers. Moreover, intricate paintings known as pictographs adorn the walls of Nerja Cave. These artistic expressions offer glimpses into our ancestors' lives and beliefs from millennia past. Currently, intensive archaeological work is underway to precisely date these invaluable artworks. Nerja Cave serves as a testament to both nature's breathtaking beauty and humanity's rich history. It stands as a reminder that even hidden beneath Earth's surface lies a wealth of knowledge waiting to be discovered and appreciated by all who venture into its depths.
