Nikolai Basov, Soviet physicist

Nikolai Gennadiyevich Basov (1922-2001), Soviet physicist. Basov is primarily known for his work with Aleksandr Prokhorov on developing masers (amplified beams of microwaves) and applying this to light to produce lasers (amplified beams of light). This work earned him the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics, jointly with Prokhorov and Townes. He was a Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and Director of the Lebedev Physics Institute.
