Nukuoro Atoll, ISS image C016 / 3885
Nukuoro Atoll. View from the International Space Station (ISS) of Nukuoro Atoll, one of 607 islands that form part of the Federated States of Micronesia. This atoll is part of the Caroline Island chain, which stretches north-east of Papua New Guinea in the western Pacific. About 900 people live on the atoll whose lagoon is 6 kilometres in diameter. Patches of vegetation (green) are where fields and forests have been established on land built up by the wind. The lagoon water is calm compared to the waves seen on the ocean waters. Coral heads are present in the lagoon, one at centre. Photographed by an Expedition 13 crew member on 31 May 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the stunning beauty of Nukuoro Atoll, as seen from the International Space Station (ISS). Located in the Federated States of Micronesia, this remote atoll is part of the Caroline Island chain and is home to approximately 900 people. The circular shape of the atoll's lagoon, spanning 6 kilometers in diameter, stands out against the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The image showcases a contrast between land and water. Patches of vibrant green vegetation dotting the sandy surface indicate areas where fields and forests have been established by human settlement. The calmness of the lagoon waters provides a stark juxtaposition to the powerful waves crashing on its outer edges. Coral heads can be spotted within the lagoon, with one prominently displayed at its center. These natural formations add to Nukuoro Atoll's allure and contribute to its status as an island paradise. Taken by an astronaut during Expedition 13 on May 31st, 2006, this photograph offers a unique perspective on Earth's geography from space. With its isolated location and untouched beauty, Nukuoro Atoll serves as a reminder of our planet's diverse landscapes. This image invites viewers to appreciate both its serene tranquility and untamed natural elements that make it truly extraordinary.
