EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1883, showcasing the majestic Observatory House in Princeton, New Jersey. Erected in 1877, this building was a significant addition to Princeton University as it provided them with a functional telescope before their main astronomy building had one. Also known as the Observatory of the John C. Green School of Science at Princeton, this historical structure served as both an educational facility and residence for astronomy students and lecturers. Within its walls resided an array of astronomical instruments that aided in unraveling the mysteries of our universe. The esteemed US astronomer Charles Augustus Young took on the role of its first director until his passing in 1908. This photograph highlights not only the grandeur of the Observatory House but also showcases its distinctive telescope dome on the left side. Regrettably, this iconic building met its demise in 1963 when it was demolished. However, its legacy lives on through images like these that allow us to appreciate its significance within scientific history. This remarkable piece from Science Photo Library offers a glimpse into a bygone era where education and exploration merged seamlessly under one roof. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in our understanding of astrophysics while honoring those who paved the way for future generations at Princeton University's School of Science.
