Octopus hunting

Reef octopus (Octopus cyanea) hunting on coral rubble. It is using the membrane between its arms to trap small animals inside the coral on which it is perched. This octopus is common in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. It feeds mainly on crustaceans. It can change the colour and texture of its skin to camouflage itself from predators and prey. It spends much of its time hiding in a den. Unusually for an octopus it is active by day, which has earned it the alternative name day octopus. Photographed in the Andaman Sea, Thailand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sight of a Reef octopus (Octopus cyanea) in action. The vibrant coral rubble serves as the hunting ground for this intelligent creature, showcasing its remarkable adaptation skills. With its arms spread wide, it skillfully employs the membrane between them to ensnare unsuspecting small animals within the crevices of the coral. Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, this octopus species primarily sustains itself on crustaceans found in these waters. Its ability to alter both color and texture allows it to seamlessly blend into its surroundings, providing effective camouflage against predators and prey alike. While most octopuses are nocturnal creatures, this particular species defies convention by actively hunting during daylight hours, earning it the moniker "day octopus". The photograph was taken in Thailand's Andaman Sea, where marine life thrives abundantly. The image showcases not only the intricate web-like structure created by the octopus but also provides a glimpse into its predatory nature beneath tranquil ocean waves. As an invaluable addition to any nature enthusiast's collection or educational resource on marine biology and zoology, this stunning print from Science Photo Library perfectly encapsulates both beauty and scientific significance without mentioning commercial use or affiliations with any specific company.
