Optical image of comet Hale-Bopp

Comet Hale-Bopp. Optical image of comet Hale-Bopp showing its gas and dust tails. Hale-Bopp was one of the brightest comets of the 20th century. Its gas or " ion" tail (stretching to upper left) consists of ionised glowing gas blown away from the comet head by the solar wind. The dust tail (stretching to upper right) consists of grains of dust pushed away from the comet head by the radiation of sunlight. Comets have a nucleus of ice and dust. As they approach the Sun their surface evaporates, releasing a tail millions of kilometres long. Comet Hale-Bopp was discovered on 23 June 1995. Photographed in March 1997

Comet Hale Bopp Cometary Cosmology

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of comet Hale-Bopp, one of the most brilliant comets witnessed in the 20th century. The optical image captures the remarkable gas and dust tails that define this celestial wonder. On the left side, we can observe its ethereal gas or "ion" tail, which glows with ionized gas expelled from the comet's head by the solar wind. Stretching towards the upper right, we witness its enchanting dust tail consisting of tiny grains pushed away from the comet's head by sunlight radiation. Comets like Hale-Bopp possess a nucleus composed of ice and dust particles. As they journey closer to our Sun, these icy surfaces evaporate dramatically, resulting in an awe-inspiring tail extending millions of kilometers into space. The discovery date for Comet Hale-Bopp was June 23rd, 1995; however, this photograph was taken in March 1997 when it graced our skies with its stunning presence. This extraordinary image not only serves as a testament to humanity's fascination with cosmic phenomena but also reminds us of our place within a vast universe full of wonders waiting to be explored. This remarkable photograph is courtesy of Science Photo Library – an invaluable resource for scientific imagery encompassing various fields such as astronomy, cosmology, and cometary studies.
