Optical image of the Cygnus loop supernova remnant

Cygnus loop supernova remnant. True-colour optical image of the Cygnus loop supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. These faint wisps of gas are the remnants of a star which blew up around 20, 000 years ago. It is composed of hydrogen gas which glows due to excitation from the pressure of the supernovas shock wave. The remnant lies about 2500 light years away. The brightest part of the ring is also known as the Veil Nebula (NGC 6992, upper left), and the ring as a whole is sometimes called the Cirrus nebula. The section at right is NGC 6960. This image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken by the Palomar Schmidt Telescope in blue and red light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of the Cygnus loop supernova remnant in all its true-color glory. Located in the constellation Cygnus, these delicate wisps of gas are remnants from a star that met its explosive demise approximately 20,000 years ago. Composed primarily of hydrogen gas, this celestial spectacle illuminates as it is excited by the pressure exerted from the shock wave generated by the supernova. Situated an astonishing 2500 light-years away, this remarkable image highlights various distinct features within the remnant. The most luminous segment, known as the Veil Nebula (NGC 6992), graces us with its presence in the upper left corner of this cosmic canvas. Meanwhile, encompassing it all is a ring-like structure often referred to as Cirrus nebula. The right section of this photograph introduces us to NGC 6960, adding another layer of intrigue and complexity to an already mesmerizing scene. This stunning visual representation was meticulously crafted through digital manipulation and merging photographs taken by none other than Palomar Schmidt Telescope - renowned for capturing celestial wonders with unparalleled precision. As we gaze upon this extraordinary snapshot captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we are reminded not only of our insignificance amidst such vastness but also humbled by nature's ability to create such breathtaking displays throughout our universe.
