Organ of Corti, inner ear, SEM

Organ of Corti. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the organ of Corti from the cochlea of the inner ear. The bony capsule that encloses the organ has been removed to reveal the organs spiral structure. Rows of sensory hairs within the organ of Corti convert sound vibrations into nerve impulses that are sent along the auditory nerve to the brain. Different sound frequencies stimulate hairs in different positions along the spiral. Low frequencies stimulate those near the top of the spiral and high frequencies stimulate those near the bottom. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate beauty of the Organ of Corti, a vital sensory organ within the inner ear. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted an extraordinary glimpse into its spiral structure after removing the protective bony capsule that encloses it. The Organ of Corti plays a crucial role in our auditory system by converting sound vibrations into nerve impulses. Rows upon rows of delicate sensory hairs line this remarkable structure, each responsible for detecting different frequencies of sound. As low-frequency sounds reach our ears, they stimulate the hairs near the top of the spiral, while high-frequency sounds activate those closer to the bottom. Through this mesmerizing SEM image, we gain insight into how our hearing functions on a microscopic level. The spiraling arrangement and vibrant colors bring to life the complexity and precision with which our ears perceive sound. This photograph serves as a testament to both biology's elegance and human ingenuity in capturing such detailed images using scanning electron microscopy. It reminds us of just how intricately designed our bodies are and highlights one small yet essential component that allows us to experience and appreciate all forms of auditory stimuli.
