Otho, the seventh emperor of the Roman Empire, reigned during the Year of the Four Emperors for three months from January 69 AD to his suicide in April to avoid civil war. This artwork is from a 1691 Dutch edition of a collection of works by the Roman historian Suetonius, best known for his 121 AD work De Vita Caesarum (On the Life of the Caesars, or The Twelve Caesars ). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork of Otho, the Roman emperor who reigned during the tumultuous Year of the Four Emperors. Dating back to 1691, this Dutch edition print is part of a collection by renowned Roman historian Suetonius. The engraver responsible for this exquisite piece is Joannes Schildius, as mentioned in the Latin text at the bottom. Otho's portrait exudes power and authority, capturing his role as ruler of one of history's greatest empires. The detailed illustration depicts him in classical Roman attire, adorned with symbols that represent his imperial status. As we delve into history through this image, we are reminded of Otho's tragic fate - driven to suicide in April 69 AD to avoid further civil war. The ornate border surrounding the artwork adds an elegant touch and reflects the artistic style prevalent during the 17th century. This monochrome engraving transports us back to ancient Rome, where political intrigue and military arms shaped its destiny. Preserved within these pages lies not only a visual representation but also a historical account penned by Suetonius himself. Edited by Johannes G. Graevius, a German philologist known for his scholarly contributions, this publication offers valuable insights into Otho's life and reign. Todd-White Art Photography has skillfully captured this significant piece from Science Photo Library, allowing us to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and historical significance.
