Paramecium protozoa, SEM Z105 / 0239

Paramecium protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two Paramecium caudatum protozoa on filaments (green) of Oscillatoria sp. blue-green algae. P. caudatum are single-celled micro-organisms. They are covered in numerous cilia, hair-like structures that are used for propulsion and to waft food particles into the mouth. The food is moved along a groove in their surface into the round oral cavity (black). Paramecium protozoa are aquatic. P. caudatum is found mainly in stagnant ponds, feeding on bacteria and on plant material. Magnification: x320 when printed 10cm high

Alga Blue Green Algae Cavity Cilia Ciliate Freshwater Mouth Protozoa Protozoan Vertical

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Paramecium caudatum protozoa. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), two Paramecia can be seen gracefully gliding on filaments of Oscillatoria sp. , a type of blue-green algae. These single-celled micro-organisms are covered in numerous cilia, hair-like structures that serve both as their means of propulsion and to guide food particles towards their mouths. The round oral cavity, depicted in black, acts as the entrance for nourishment. A groove along their surface aids in moving the food into this cavity before digestion begins. As aquatic creatures, these Paramecia thrive mainly in stagnant ponds where they feed on bacteria and plant material. Magnified 320 times when printed at a height of 10cm, this image allows us to appreciate the mesmerizing details present within these tiny organisms. The vertical composition emphasizes their delicate nature while highlighting the vibrant green coloration provided by Oscillatoria sp. This photograph not only offers an insight into the world of microscopic life but also serves as a reminder of the astounding diversity found within our natural environment. It is a testament to the wonders waiting to be discovered through scientific exploration and observation.
