Paramyxovirus particles, TEM

Sendai virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Sendai virus particles (virions, orange). The protein coat (capsid) of one of the particles has split, allowing its RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material (orange strips) to spill out. The Sendai virus is a paramyxovirus. Also known as parainfluenza virus type 1, it infects mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs. It is transmitted by direct contact and in the air, causing laboured breathing and a decrease in the number of offspring produced. The Sendai virus is also used as a cell-fusing agent in laboratories. Magnification unknown. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © DR LINDA STANNARD, UCT/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of paramyxovirus particles. In this coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM), we can observe Sendai virus particles, represented in a vibrant orange hue. The image reveals a fascinating moment as the protein coat or capsid of one particle has split open, causing its RNA genetic material to spill out in the form of striking orange strips. Sendai virus, also known as parainfluenza virus type 1, is an infectious pathogen that primarily affects mice, rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs. It spreads through direct contact and airborne transmission, leading to laboured breathing and reduced offspring production among infected subjects. Interestingly, this particular virus serves another purpose beyond its detrimental effects on these rodents; it is employed as a cell-fusing agent in laboratory settings. The magnification level used for capturing this mesmerizing image remains unknown but highlights the remarkable detail visible under high-powered microscopy. This photograph provides valuable insights into virology and respiratory diseases caused by viral pathogens like Sendai virus. Science Photo Library continues to contribute immensely to our understanding of biology and microbiology through their extensive collection of images depicting various scientific subjects.
