Partial phase of an annular eclipse (10 / 5 / 94)
Partial phase of the annular eclipse which occurred on May 10th 1994. The image was taken at 17:25:42 Universal Time (UT) when the Moon was occulting 79% of the Suns disc. Annular eclipses occur when the Moon is near the farthest extent of its orbit around the Earth. As it appears smaller in the sky, it does not fully cover the solar disc during the eclipse, and a ring-shaped portion (annulus) of the Sun remains visible. When the Moon is nearer, it may completely obscure the Sun, causing a total eclipse. On average a third of all solar eclipses are annular. Sixth in a series of eight pictures

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a partial phase of an annular eclipse that occurred on May 10th, 1994. Taken at precisely 17:25:42 Universal Time (UT), this image showcases the Moon obscuring a remarkable 79% of the Sun's disc. Annular eclipses occur when the Moon is positioned near its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. As it appears smaller in the sky, it creates a breathtaking spectacle where it does not fully cover the solar disc during the eclipse, leaving behind a ring-shaped portion known as an annulus. This unique phenomenon allows for a stunning visual contrast between light and shadow. Total eclipses occur when the Moon is closer to Earth and completely obscures our view of the Sun, resulting in complete darkness or twilight-like conditions. On average, about one-third of all solar eclipses are annular like this one. Part of a series of eight pictures capturing different stages of this celestial event, this particular photograph offers us an extraordinary glimpse into our vast universe. It serves as a reminder that even amidst scientific exploration and astronomical wonders, there is still so much left to discover and understand about our cosmic surroundings.
