Penicillin G drug molecule

Penicillin G. Computer model of a molecule of the antibiotic drug penicillin G, also known as benzylpenicillin (formula: C16H18N2O4S). The atoms are colour-coded: carbon (blue), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (light blue), oxygen (red) and sulphur (yellow). This was the first penicillin, isolated from the mould Penicillium sp. in 1940, but most of this family of drugs are synthetic. Penicillin G is best given by injection, and is used to treat throat and ear infections, pneumonia and meningococcal meningitis. Some people are allergic to the penicillin drugs, and their use prompts symptoms including a rash, itching and possibly even anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of Penicillin G, the first-ever penicillin antibiotic. The computer-generated model beautifully illustrates the molecular composition of this life-saving drug. Each atom is color-coded, allowing us to distinguish carbon in blue, hydrogen in white, nitrogen in light blue, oxygen in red, and sulfur in yellow. Penicillin G was initially isolated from the mold Penicillium sp. back in 1940 and has since revolutionized medicine with its potent antibacterial properties. Although most penicillins are now synthetically produced, this particular compound remains highly effective against various infections such as throat and ear infections, pneumonia, and meningococcal meningitis. However beneficial it may be for many patients, it's important to note that some individuals experience allergic reactions when exposed to penicillin drugs. Symptoms can range from a simple rash or itching to severe anaphylactic shock which can even prove fatal. In today's pharmaceutical world where advancements have led to countless new drugs and treatments being developed daily, this image serves as a reminder of one of science's greatest achievements - harnessing nature's power through chemistry to combat harmful bacteria and save lives.
