Peutinger table, historical map

Peutinger table. A section of the historic Peutinger table, which was a 13th century copy of a Roman map. Roads and cities are depicted but the work, which was cut into 12 sections, was heavily elongated - leading to it appearing squashed in the North-South direction. The copy was produced by a Monk named Colmar, in Alsace, and was 6 metres wide by 30 centimetres tall in dimensions. Taken from A Book of Discovery, M.B. Synge (1912)

1200s 13th Century Africa Cartography Copy Drawing Fragment Portion Road Roads Roman Rome Book Of Discovery Colmar Section

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a section of the renowned Peutinger table, an extraordinary historical map that offers a glimpse into the Roman Empire's vast road network and cities. Dating back to the 13th century, this particular copy was meticulously created by a talented Monk named Colmar in Alsace. Measuring an impressive 6 meters wide by 30 centimeters tall, it is no wonder that this masterpiece had to be divided into twelve sections. What makes the Peutinger table truly fascinating is its peculiar elongated shape, which gives it an appearance of being squashed in the North-South direction. This distortion adds intrigue to its already remarkable depiction of ancient geography and cartography. As you explore this fragmentary illustration, you can trace your finger along roads leading from Rome itself to far-flung regions like Africa. Preserved within A Book of Discovery by M. B. Synge (1912), this print not only captures history but also invites us to marvel at human ingenuity throughout time. The intricate details and meticulous craftsmanship displayed in this section of the Peutinger table remind us of our ancestors' dedication to mapping their world accurately. Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply intrigued by ancient civilizations, this print serves as a gateway into understanding how our predecessors navigated vast landscapes centuries ago – all through lines on parchment brought to life with ink and imagination.
