EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Philippe Ricord, a renowned French surgeon and venerologist. Born in Baltimore, USA, to French parents in 1800, Ricord's passion for medicine led him to study in Philadelphia before embarking on a journey to France in 1820. His expertise and dedication earned him the prestigious position of surgeon-in-chief at the hospital for venereal diseases at the Hopital du Midi in Paris in 1831. Ricord's groundbreaking contributions revolutionized our understanding of sexually transmitted infections. In 1838, he definitively proved that syphilis and gonorrhea were distinct diseases. Moreover, he introduced a system still used today that classifies syphilis into primary, secondary, and tertiary stages. Recognizing his immense talent and knowledge, Napoleon III appointed Ricord as his personal physician in 1862—a testament to his exceptional reputation within the medical community. This monochrome portrait captures Ricord's dignified presence as an esteemed figure from the nineteenth century. With his piercing gaze and refined features, he personifies the dedicated medical professionals who shaped our understanding of human health during this era. Philippe Ricord passed away in 1889 but left behind an enduring legacy that continues to impact modern medicine.
