ALICE detector magnets

ALICE detector magnets during construction. ALICE is " A Large Ion Collider Experiment" for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. The internal space (full of scaffolding) will contain the rest of the detector which will be inserted by opening the magnet doors seen. The central hole in the doors will allow ALICE to be placed around part of the 27-kilometre-long underground LHC ring that will accelerate ion beams to collide head-on. The collision energy will create new particles whose decay products will be detected. A magnet is required to detect charged particles. The LHC is scheduled to start operating in 2007

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the construction of the ALICE detector magnets, a crucial component of the groundbreaking "A Large Ion Collider Experiment" (ALICE) at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. The image captures a moment during the assembly process, with scaffolding filling the internal space where the rest of the detector will be inserted through magnet doors. The central hole in these doors serves as a gateway for ALICE to encircle part of the 27-kilometre-long underground LHC ring. This massive accelerator will propel ion beams to collide head-on, generating collision energy that gives birth to new particles. To detect these charged particles accurately, powerful magnets are essential. In this photograph, we witness skilled technicians and engineers meticulously working together amidst an intricate web of cranes and technological equipment. Their expertise is evident as they carefully assemble each module with precision and dedication. The ALICE project represents cutting-edge advancements in particle physics research and holds immense potential for unraveling mysteries about our universe's fundamental building blocks. With its scheduled operation set for 2007, this ambitious experiment promises to deliver groundbreaking discoveries that could reshape our understanding of nature itself. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this snapshot from within CERN's particle physics laboratory - an emblematic testament to human ingenuity pushing boundaries in pursuit of scientific knowledge.
