Plant cell

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cell in the root tip of a maize plant, Zea mays. Plant cells are distinct from animal cells in having an additional external envelope, the plant cell wall, outside the plasma membrane. In this micrograph, the cell wall, made of proteins & polysaccharides, appears as the thin layer between the cells. The wall defines the shape of the cell & expands as it grows. The prom- inent, round organelle in the cell is the nucleus, which contains a smaller, red nucleolus. The yellow areas in the cytoplasm are vacuoles. Magn- ification: x1765 at 35mm size, x2825 at 6x4.5cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 6.1, page 108

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate beauty of a plant cell, specifically from the root tip of a maize plant (Zea mays). Through false-colour transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we are able to explore the unique features that distinguish plant cells from animal cells. The most noticeable distinction is the presence of an external envelope known as the plant cell wall, which lies outside the plasma membrane. In this micrograph, the thin layer between cells represents this vital structure composed of proteins and polysaccharides. The cell wall not only provides support and protection but also defines the shape of each individual cell while expanding alongside its growth. At first glance, our attention is drawn to the prominent round organelle within this particular cell - it is none other than the nucleus. Within its confines resides a smaller red nucleolus, responsible for ribosome production. As we delve deeper into this mesmerizing image, we notice yellow areas scattered throughout the cytoplasm - these are vacuoles. Magnified at x1765 in 35mm size or x2825 in 6x4.5cm size, every detail becomes more pronounced and awe-inspiring. This photograph serves as a testament to botanical science's ability to unravel nature's secrets at microscopic levels. It invites us to appreciate both complexity and elegance found within plants' cellular structures while reminding us of their fundamental role in sustaining life on Earth.
