PLM of a synthetic liquid crystal polymer fibres
Liquid crystal fibres. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of an extruded, cellulosic, liquid crystal (LC) polymer fibres. LC polymers are long, rod- like molecules which have a tendency to align in the same direction under certain conditions. When this happens the mechanical properties (especially strength) of the material are greatly enhanced in the direction of the alignment. This is especially true in extruded fibers. Extrusion is the process of forcing molten material through an aperture, to form a profile such as a fibre. LC fibre material is strong & lightweight and is especially useful for bullet proof clothing. Magnification: x12.5 at 35mm size

Fibre Material Materials Polymer Synthetic Synthetic Fibre Extruded
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a synthetic liquid crystal polymer fiber under polarized light. The image, captured through a polarized light microscope (PLM), reveals the mesmerizing alignment of long, rod-like molecules that make up the liquid crystal (LC) polymer fibers. Under certain conditions, LC polymers have a natural tendency to align in one direction. This alignment greatly enhances the mechanical properties and strength of the material along this specific direction. Extruded fibers, like the one depicted here, benefit immensely from this phenomenon. Extrusion is a process where molten material is forced through an aperture to form various profiles such as fibers. In this case, LC fiber material has been extruded into a strong and lightweight structure with exceptional bulletproof capabilities. Its remarkable strength-to-weight ratio makes it particularly useful for applications in protective clothing. At 12.5 times magnification on a 35mm scale, every detail of these synthetic fibers becomes visible - their ordered arrangement creating an aesthetically pleasing pattern reminiscent of nature's own designs. This PLM photograph not only highlights the scientific marvels found within materials but also serves as a reminder of how advancements in materials science can lead to innovative solutions for our safety and protection without compromising comfort or style.
