Pollen on honeybee face

False-colour scanning electron micrograph of unidentified pollen grains on the hairs of the face of a worker honey bee, Apis mellifera. The hairs on the face of the honey bee are especially suited to gathering pollen; wedged amongst them, the pollen is carried from flower to flower as the bee flies about. Some grains rub off against the female stigmatic surface of the right species of flower, pollinating the plant. The bee also has a structure, called the pollen basket, on its hind knees; it combs the grains from its body with its front claws & transfers them to the basket. Magnification: x120 at 35mm size, x175 at 6x4.5cm size

Apis Mellifera Bees Honey Bee Insect Borne Jbu Colouring Pollen Re Production Reproductive

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of nature's pollination process. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph, we are granted a close-up view of unidentified pollen grains delicately clinging to the hairs on the face of a worker honey bee, known as Apis mellifera. The specialized hairs on the honey bee's face serve as perfect tools for gathering pollen from flowers. As these bees fly from one blossom to another, some of these precious grains rub off against the female stigmatic surface of specific flower species, thereby pollinating them and enabling plant reproduction. Additionally, notice how this industrious insect possesses a unique structure called the pollen basket on its hind knees. Using its front claws, it meticulously combs any remaining grains from its body and transfers them to this designated storage area. This efficient mechanism ensures that no pollen is wasted during their crucial mission. With magnification levels reaching x120 at 35mm size and x175 at 6x4.5cm size, every detail in this image becomes vividly apparent. The vibrant colours used in false-colour scanning electron microscopy further enhance our appreciation for both the complexity and elegance found within nature's interconnected web. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to the vital role bees play in our ecosystems while also highlighting their astonishing adaptability and efficiency when it comes to pollination—a true marvel worth celebrating!
