Pollen on stigma of Cocksfoot grass

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains clustered to the stigma of the cocksfoot grass, Dactylis glomerata. Cocksfoot pollen, a summer grass pollen dispersed by the wind, is a major cause of hay fever (medical name Allergic rhinitis & pollenosis). Hay fever sufferers produce a sensitising antibody, immunoglobin E (IgE), which attaches to the surface of cells in the nose & eyes. It reacts with inhaled pollen causing the release of chemicals including histamine. Histamine causes the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes & throat to swell & become inflamed, bringing on the symptoms of hay fever. Magnification: x20 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of pollen grains clustered on the stigma of Cocksfoot grass, scientifically known as Dactylis glomerata. The false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) allows us to appreciate the delicate details and vibrant colors that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. However, behind this mesmerizing image lies a significant issue for many individuals - hay fever. Cocksfoot pollen, which is dispersed by the wind during summer, is a major culprit in triggering allergic rhinitis and pollinosis, commonly referred to as hay fever. Those who suffer from this condition produce immunoglobin E (IgE), a sensitizing antibody that attaches itself to cells in their nose and eyes. Upon contact with inhaled pollen, IgE triggers a cascade of reactions leading to the release of chemicals such as histamine. Histamine causes swelling and inflammation of mucous membranes in the nose, eyes, and throat - resulting in those familiar symptoms associated with hay fever. This photograph serves not only as an artistic representation but also as a reminder of how nature's wonders can sometimes bring discomfort to certain individuals. It highlights both the beauty and complexity found within plant reproduction while shedding light on an important aspect of human health affected by environmental factors like pollen allergies.
