Pollination, SEM

Pollination. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of a flowers pistil with pollen grains attached. The pistil is the female reproductive part of a flower, comprising one or more carpels. Here, many carpels (projections) can be seen with pollen grains (balls) attached to the sticky tips of each carpel, called stigmas. Each carpel comprises a stigma, a style (the projection between stigma and ovary), and an ovary containing eggs (not seen). Pollen, the male sex cells of a flowering plant, lands on the stigma and burrows down through the style to reach the ovary at the styles base. It then fertilises the ovum there, forming a seed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Pollination, SEM" showcases the intricate beauty of nature's reproductive process. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a close-up view of a flower's pistil adorned with pollen grains. The pistil, known as the female reproductive part of a flower, is composed of several carpels. Each carpel can be observed in this image as delicate projections, with pollen grains attached to their sticky tips called stigmas. The carpel itself consists of three essential components: the stigma, which serves as the landing site for male sex cells; the style, acting as a bridge between stigma and ovary; and finally, the ovary housing eggs that remain unseen. Pollen plays a crucial role in plant reproduction by landing on the stigma and traveling down through the style to reach the base where it fertilizes an ovum within the ovary. This fertilization process leads to seed formation. The false-coloured details captured by this scanning electron microscope offer us an awe-inspiring glimpse into pollination at its finest. It reminds us of how intricately interconnected all living organisms are and highlights nature's remarkable ability to perpetuate life through such complex biological mechanisms. This stunning photograph from Science Photo Library encapsulates not only scientific wonder but also celebrates our planet's diverse flora and its fascinating botanical processes.
