Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya, the second woman to go into space, the first to perform a space walk, and the only woman to have made two space flights (up to November 1988). Savitskaya went into space in the Soyuz T7 spacecraft on 19 August 1982, and in Soyuz T12 on 17 July 1984. Both craft docked with the Salyut 7 space station. The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova in Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963
