Potassium hydrogen tartrate crystals

False colour scanning electron micrograph of crystals of potassium hydrogen tartrate, also known as cream of tartar. These crystals precipitated out from a commercial red wine & were found on the inner surface of the cork. Grapes are unusual in that they produce large quantities of tartaric acid, together with some malic acid, whereas most fruits contain citric & malic acid. Magnification: X29 at 6x7cmsize. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of potassium hydrogen tartrate crystals, commonly known as cream of tartar. The false colour scanning electron micrograph reveals the vibrant hues and unique structure of these crystals, which were found on the inner surface of a cork that had been used to seal a commercial red wine bottle. Grapes are renowned for their high concentration of tartaric acid, making them distinct from other fruits that primarily contain citric and malic acids. As a result, when this wine was produced, large quantities of potassium hydrogen tartrate precipitated out and formed these mesmerizing crystals. The magnification at X29 allows us to appreciate the fine details within this 6x7cm-sized image. Each crystal is meticulously captured in its coloured glory, showcasing the compound's chemical composition and properties. This photograph not only serves as an aesthetic marvel but also offers valuable insights into chemistry and compounds. It highlights how natural processes can lead to fascinating formations like cream of tartar crystals in unexpected places. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an extraordinary visual representation that sparks curiosity about our world's hidden wonders.
