Pre-1997 UK CO2 fire extinguisher
Carbon dioxide fire extinguisher. Pressurized canister containing liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) for extinguishing a fire. Since 1997, UK CO2 extinguishers are red with a black label. The pin (blue, top centre) is removed and the movable horn (upper left) is aimed at the base of the fire. Squeezing the trigger (top right) releases a cloud of CO2. The CO2 reverts to a gas at room pressure and cuts off the oxygen supply, smothering the fire. Unlike a water-containing fire extinguisher, this one may be safely used on an electrical fire. The horn must not be held during use as the rapid expansion to a gas greatly lowers surrounding temperatures

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pre-1997 UK CO2 fire extinguisher, an essential tool used to combat fires. The image captures the intricate details of this historical piece of equipment, highlighting its unique features and functionality. The fire extinguisher is depicted as a pressurized canister containing liquid carbon dioxide (CO2), ready to be deployed in case of emergency. In contrast to the modern red color scheme, this older version boasts a different design with a black label. Its distinctive blue pin at the top center is removed before use, while the movable horn on the upper left is aimed directly at the base of the fire. When squeezed by activating the trigger located on the top right, a cloud of CO2 gas is released from this portable container. As it reverts to gas at room pressure, it effectively cuts off oxygen supply and smothers flames without leaving any residue behind. This makes it suitable for tackling electrical fires safely. The photograph also emphasizes an important safety precaution: one must avoid holding onto the horn during use due to rapid expansion that significantly lowers surrounding temperatures. Overall, this image provides us with insight into both past firefighting practices and how technology has evolved over time in ensuring public safety.
