Raynauds disease

Raynauds disease. Artwork of a hand affected by Raynauds disease. Blood vessels (grey) are shown in the hand. Raynauds disease is a vasospastic condition, in which the hands or feet develop an abnormal nervous response to cold. A spasm or contraction (illustrated at top right) occurs in the muscle which surrounds the blood vessels in the fingers or toes. This constriction restricts the blood flow and the fingertips become bluish in colour, numb and sore. The duration of the spasm varies. A rare form of this disease results in localized gangrene. Antispasmodic drugs may offer relief

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the debilitating effects of Raynaud's disease on a hand. The intricate network of blood vessels, depicted in grey, reveals the underlying cause of this vasospastic condition. When exposed to cold temperatures, an abnormal nervous response triggers a spasm or contraction in the muscle surrounding the blood vessels in the fingers or toes. As shown at the top right corner of this artwork, this constriction restricts blood flow, resulting in bluish fingertips that are numb and sore. The duration of these spasms varies from person to person, causing immense discomfort and hindering daily activities. Raynaud's disease can also manifest as a rare form leading to localized gangrene if left untreated. However, there is hope for relief through antispasmodic drugs that help alleviate symptoms. This monochrome illustration serves as a visual representation of an often misunderstood disorder within our circulatory system. It highlights both the fragility and resilience of our bodies when faced with such medical conditions. Through this thought-provoking image by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into Raynaud's disease – its impact on circulation and how it affects those who live with it every day.
