Reactor hall: BOR-60 fast breeder nuclear reactor

Fast breeder reactor. Reactor hall of the BOR-60 fast breeder nuclear reactor in Dimitrovgrad, Russia. Fast breeder reactor cores use plutonium fuel surrounded by uranium; they are cooled by molten sodium metal. The break-up (fission) of plutonium atoms provides energy and fast subatomic particles called neutrons. Some of the neutrons are absorbed by the uranium to form more plutonium that can be used as fuel. The BOR-60 is an experi- mental reactor capable of generating 12 megawatts. It is used for performing endurance tests of fuel, fuel sub-assemblies & new cores. Opened in 1969, it is thought to have suffered from over 180 coolant leaks & equipment breakdowns

Nuclear Nuclear Power Station Nuclear Reactor Reactor Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the impressive sight of the reactor hall at the BOR-60 fast breeder nuclear reactor in Dimitrovgrad, Russia. This advanced facility houses a fast breeder reactor that utilizes a unique combination of plutonium fuel surrounded by uranium and cooled by molten sodium metal. The process involves the fission of plutonium atoms, which releases energy and fast subatomic particles known as neutrons. What makes this reactor particularly fascinating is its ability to generate more plutonium fuel through neutron absorption by uranium. This self-sustaining cycle ensures a continuous supply of fuel for power generation. With a capacity to produce 12 megawatts, the BOR-60 serves as an experimental platform for endurance tests on various aspects such as fuel, fuel sub-assemblies, and new cores. Although opened in 1969, this remarkable facility has faced numerous challenges over time. It is estimated to have experienced over 180 coolant leaks and equipment breakdowns throughout its operation history. Despite these setbacks, scientists and engineers continue their tireless efforts to improve safety measures while pushing boundaries in nuclear technology research. This print from Science Photo Library offers us a glimpse into one of Russia's pioneering nuclear power stations—a testament to human ingenuity and our quest for sustainable energy solutions without mentioning any commercial use or specific company involved in its operations.
