Ricin molecule F006 / 9563

Ricin. Molecular model of the toxic protein ricin. It comprises two entwined amino acid chains, termed A and B. The A-chain is toxic, inhibiting protein synthesis in cells. It is carried into cells by the non-toxic B-chain. Ricin is derived from the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), making it easy to be used as a toxin by bioterrorists. Less than a milligram is enough to kill an adult. Inhaling ricin causes coughing, pulmonary oedema and death. If ingested, it causes gastroenteritis, liver and kidney damage and death from circulatory failure. There is no antidote. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate structure of the deadly ricin molecule, known as F006 / 9563. The molecular model reveals two intertwined amino acid chains, referred to as A and B. While the non-toxic B-chain facilitates its entry into cells, it is the toxic A-chain that disrupts protein synthesis within these cells. Derived from the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis), ricin has unfortunately become a weapon of choice for bioterrorists due to its ease of use as a toxin. The potency of this lethal substance is truly alarming – less than a milligram can prove fatal to an adult. Inhalation of ricin leads to coughing, pulmonary edema, and ultimately death. Ingestion results in gastroenteritis, liver and kidney damage, and often culminates in circulatory failure. It is crucial to note that there currently exists no antidote for ricin poisoning. This fact underscores both its potential threat and urgency in developing countermeasures against such bioagents. Displayed against a pristine white background, this illustration serves as a powerful reminder of the complex nature of biological warfare agents like ricin. Its detailed depiction offers valuable insights into biochemical research and medicine while highlighting the need for continued vigilance in healthcare settings worldwide.
