Robert Napier (1791-1876), Scottish engineer and founder of the Clyde shipbuilding industry in Glasgow. After serving as an apprentice to his blacksmith father, Napier set up his own business in 1815. By 1823 he was building marine steam engines. In 1827, two ships with his engines won a steamboat race and orders increased throughout the 1830s. In 1843 he built his first ship, the Vanguard, one of the earliest iron-hulled vessels. He went on to build over 300 ships. Many of his workforce eventually left to set up their own businesses along the River Clyde, making it one of the worlds great shipbuilding areas. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Robert Napier, a Scottish engineer and the visionary founder of the Clyde shipbuilding industry in Glasgow. Born in 1791, Napier began his career as an apprentice to his blacksmith father before establishing his own business in 1815. By 1823, he had already ventured into building marine steam engines, which gained immense recognition when two ships equipped with his engines emerged victorious in a thrilling steamboat race held in 1827. As orders poured in throughout the 1830s, Napier's reputation soared. In 1843, he achieved another milestone by constructing the Vanguard, one of the earliest iron-hulled vessels ever built. This marked just the beginning of his illustrious career as he went on to construct over 300 ships that sailed across oceans worldwide. Napier's influence extended beyond mere shipbuilding; many members of his workforce eventually left to establish their own businesses along the River Clyde. Consequently, this area became renowned as one of the world's most prominent shipbuilding regions. The monochrome engraving captured by William G. Jackman beautifully portrays Napier's determined gaze and pioneering spirit against a backdrop reflecting industrial progress during the mid-19th century. This artwork serves as a testament to Napier's significant contributions to engineering history and technological advancements that shaped British industry.
