Ruff, historical artwork

Ruff. Historical artwork of a male ruff (Philomachus pugnax), a wading bird. Only the male has the prominent collar of display feathers that gives this bird its name. The feathers are used in displays at a lek, an area where males gather to compete against each other for females. The ruff is a migrant, and spends the breeding season in moist grasslands in northern Europe and Eurasia. In the winter it heads south to wetlands in southern Europe, Africa and parts of southern Asia. It feeds on insects, frogs and small fish, with some plant matter as well. It may reach over 30 centimetres in length. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artwork of a male ruff, a remarkable wading bird known as Philomachus pugnax. The focal point of this avian masterpiece lies in the male's striking collar made up of display feathers, which bestows upon it the name "ruff". These magnificent feathers play an essential role during displays at leks, where males congregate to compete for female attention. The ruff is renowned for its migratory nature, spending its breeding season in lush grasslands across northern Europe and Eurasia. As winter approaches, it embarks on an arduous journey southward towards wetlands found in southern Europe, Africa, and parts of southern Asia. This elegant creature sustains itself by feasting on insects, frogs, small fish, and even indulging in plant matter occasionally. With a length that can exceed 30 centimeters, the ruff captivates with both its graceful appearance and ecological significance. Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935), a talented European artist specializing in ornithology illustrations, skillfully captured this mesmerizing scene through his intricate drawing. His work immortalizes the beauty and history associated with this British waterbird species. This vertical artwork not only celebrates the natural world but also serves as a testament to our fascination with wildlife throughout time.
