EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Russian physicist Peter Kapitza, a true pioneer in his field. Born on July 8,1894, in Kronshtadt, Kapitza's intellectual journey began at the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute where he graduated in 1919. His insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to join Lord Rutherford's team at the prestigious Cavendish laboratory in Cambridge in 1921. At Cavendish, Kapitza delved into groundbreaking research on the magnetic properties of metals. However, it was his return to Russia in 1934 that marked a turning point in his career. It was there that he conducted his most renowned studies on helium's behavior under extremely low temperatures. Despite his remarkable contributions to science and unwavering dedication to peaceful pursuits, Kapitza faced immense challenges during World War II due to his refusal to work on nuclear weapons. This resulted in virtual house arrest for him during those tumultuous years. In the post-war era, Kapitza redirected his focus towards space research and studying the enigmatic phenomenon of ball lightning. His relentless pursuit of scientific truth propelled him forward as an influential figure within these fields. This extraordinary portrait immortalizes Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitza - not just as a scientist but also as an embodiment of integrity and resilience amidst adversity.
