Salps. Chain of salps, Salpa maxima, a type of tunicate

Salps. Chain of salps, Salpa maxima, a type of tunicate. S. maxima is largely translucent and pumps its way through the water by taking fluid into its mouth and expelling it through its anus. Salps are filter feeders, removing microscopic plankton from the upper levels of the worlds oceans. They grow up to 6 centimetres long and are often connected in chains up to 25 metres long. They are chordates, creatures in which part of the life cycle contains a nerve cord, a primitive spinal cord

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Salps, a unique type of tunicate known as Salpa maxima. The translucent bodies of these fascinating creatures allow us to witness their intricate internal workings. As filter feeders, they play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our oceans by removing microscopic plankton from its upper levels. Measuring up to 6 centimeters long, these chain-like organisms are often found connected in impressive formations stretching up to 25 meters. Their synchronized movements create an ethereal spectacle that reminds us of the interconnectedness and harmony within nature. Salps propel themselves through water by ingeniously taking fluid into their mouths and expelling it through their anus—a remarkable feat that keeps them constantly on the move. They belong to a group called chordates, which means they possess a primitive spinal cord or nerve cord at some stage in their life cycle. As we gaze upon this stunning image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the immense diversity present beneath the ocean's surface. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly small and inconspicuous creatures like salps contribute significantly to our planet's health and vitality. Let this photograph be an invitation for us all to appreciate and protect Earth's wild wonders—those hidden treasures that enrich our lives immeasurably.
