Salt pans by the Dead Sea
Dead Sea salt pans. View from orbit of salt pans (centre) at the southern end of the Dead Sea (far right). North is at right. The pans have been isolated from the main body of water and are left to evaporate, which leaves valuable salt as a remnant. These salt pans are in Jordan, but the top of the image (west of Jordan) is taken up by Israel. The Dead Sea is so named as its high salt concentration makes it impossible for anything to live in it. This is due to the evaporation rate exceeding the inflow of water. The water level of the Dead Sea is over 200 metres below mean sea level. Photographed during Space Shuttle mission STS-028 on 10th August 1989

1989 Basin Dead Sea Earth Observation Evaporation From Space Horizontal Inland Jordan Middle East Jordanian Salt Pans
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing salt pans by the Dead Sea, as seen from orbit during the Space Shuttle mission STS-028 on August 10th, 1989. Located at the southern end of the Dead Sea, these salt pans are isolated from the main body of water and left to evaporate, resulting in valuable salt remnants. The image showcases a stunning view with the salt pans positioned at the center, while Israel dominates the top portion. The name "Dead Sea" is derived from its incredibly high salt concentration, rendering it inhospitable for any form of life. This phenomenon occurs due to an evaporation rate that surpasses its inflow of water. Remarkably, this extraordinary body of water sits over 200 meters below mean sea level. The photograph not only highlights Jordan's breathtaking natural landscape but also sheds light on environmental factors such as basin formation and evaporation processes. It serves as a testament to Earth observation capabilities from space and offers a unique perspective on our planet's geography. Captured by Science Photo Library during their non-commercial use period, this image stands as a remarkable testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation for our world's wonders.
