Salyut 7 space station in orbit, 1980s C016 / 6372

Salyut 7 space station in orbit. This Soviet space station was in orbit for nearly nine years from its launch on 19 April 1982, until it re-entered the earths atmosphere and broke up on 7 February 1991. A total of seven crews (of three) visited the space station before late 1984, when a power failure led to the loss of life support functions during an unmanned period. It was manned again for a period in 1985 and 1986. Here, a Soyuz spacecraft (black, upper centre) is docked at one end. The space station itself was 16 metres long. It orbited at an altitude of between 220 and 280 kilometres. The Moon (lower right) is visible above the Earths limb

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of the Salyut 7 space station in orbit during the 1980s. The Soviet space station, which remained in orbit for an impressive nine years from its launch in April 1982 until its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere in February 1991, was a symbol of pioneering technological advancements. Measuring at a length of 16 meters, this remarkable feat of engineering orbited at an altitude ranging between 220 and 280 kilometers above our planet's surface. In this image, we witness a Soyuz spacecraft docked at one end of the space station, showcasing the collaborative efforts that took place within this cosmic outpost. The historical significance of Salyut 7 is highlighted by the fact that seven crews visited it before late 1984 when a power failure tragically resulted in the loss of life support functions during an unmanned period. However, manned missions resumed briefly between 1985 and 1986. As we gaze upon this artwork-like montage captured by Detlev van Ravenswaay, we are reminded not only of humanity's quest to explore outer space but also of the ingenuity and determination displayed by Soviet cosmonauts who ventured into unknown frontiers. With Earth's limb visible below and the Moon shining brightly on the lower right corner, this image serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit to unravel celestial mysteries.
