Saturns north pole region, Cassini image

Saturns north pole region, Cassini image. This north polar hexagon region of the gas giant planet Saturn is in sunlight as spring comes to the planets northern hemisphere. Saturn takes 29 years to orbit the Sun. Smaller storms are seen within the larger pattern. The sides of the hexagon are each around 13, 800 kilometres long. In the background is part of Saturns rings (upper right). Saturns shadow (upper left) partially obscures the rings. Image obtained on 27 November 2012, by the wide-angle camera on the orbiting Cassini spacecraft. A spectral filter was used that is sensitive to wavelengths of near-infrared light

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Saturn's mesmerizing north pole region, as captured by the Cassini spacecraft. Bathed in sunlight, this gas giant planet welcomes spring to its northern hemisphere. With a staggering orbital period of 29 years around the Sun, Saturn reveals a stunning hexagonal pattern at its north polar region. Each side of this remarkable hexagon stretches approximately 13,800 kilometers long, making it an awe-inspiring sight. Within this larger pattern lie smaller storms that add depth and complexity to the scene. In the background, part of Saturn's magnificent rings can be seen on the upper right side of the image. However, their beauty is partially obscured by Saturn's shadow on the upper left. Taken on November 27th, 2012, using a wide-angle camera equipped with a near-infrared light-sensitive filter aboard Cassini spacecraft orbiting around Saturn; this image offers us a glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary phenomena. The monochrome composition highlights various atmospheric elements such as clouds and vortices present within this unique standing wave pattern. This photograph not only serves as a testament to planetary science but also reminds us of our place in the vastness of space within our solar system.
